Post-Doc: Carbon Nanostructures

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) -Laboratory for Carbon Nanostructures

Competitive Tax-free Salary
Job description:One Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available immediately in the Laboratory for Carbon Nanostructures (LCN) at the Physical Sciences and Engineering Division of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).
The LCN@KAUST is currently developing novel approaches to the growth, characterization and manipulation of carbon allotropes such as graphene and nanotubes. Candidates with expert-level skills in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are encouraged to apply. The position is particularly well suited for an electron microscopist with interests in both in situ methods and carbon nanostructures.

Qualifications:A PhD degree, within 5 years of receipt, in physics, materials science, chemistry or related areas is mandatory. The candidate must be a skilled electron microscopist with driving capability of aberration corrected TEMs. Experience in one or more of the following sub-areas in TEM is necessary: in situ probing, high resolution imaging, electron energy loss spectroscopy and FIB sample preparation/manipulation. Proficiency in English is fundamental as well as good communication skills. A track-record of high quality scientific publications as first (or corresponding) author is desirable. Willingness to travel and spend time in partner laboratories abroad will also be beneficial.

Duties:The research fellow is expected to optimize in situ methods for aberration-corrected TEM with a particular emphasis in probing and manipulating carbon nanostructures grown by other members of the laboratory. Results will be communicated in the appropriate forums (e.g. journals and conferences). Further to this, assistance in the day-to-day coordination of the LCN analytical activities as well as in the guidance of graduate students is anticipated. Enthusiasm to participate in the elaboration of competitive funding proposals is also advantageous.

Appointment period, salary and benefits:The initial appointment is for one year. Subsequent to a positive assessment, the contract may be renewed annually up to a total of three years. The tax-free remuneration is highly competitive and commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and experience. In addition, KAUST offers a very attractive package of benefits, some of which are extendable to dependents. These may include: free accommodation, free medical and dental insurance, 20 work-days paid vacation leave and free schooling (for the fellow’s children).

Application procedure:To apply, visit the Apply button below (requisition 2745BR). All applications must be submitted through this site for consideration. Submit an application letter together with an updated CV (list of publications inclusive). Upon the initial screening process and ahead of the interview stage, further information may be requested from selected candidates. Review of applications will begin soon and the position will remain open until filled.

About KAUST:KAUST is an international, graduate-level research university located on the Red Sea coast of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 80 km north of Jeddah, the kingdom’s second largest city. The campus is surrounded by a vibrant cosmopolitan community which integrates the members of KAUST and their families. Amongst other state-of-the-art facilities, the university houses a unique collection of top-end aberration-corrected TEMs. Their daily operation and maintenance is ensured by a dedicated team of expert microscopists and engineers.
