Job Description

Research Associateship Program Research Opportunities.  The National Research Council of the National Academies is accepting applications for competitive awards for independent graduate, postdoctoral and senior scientific research to be conducted at participating US federal laboratories and affiliated institutions.  Awards are offered in all fields of science and engineering.  These awards provide the opportunity to devote full time to research in state-of-the-art facilities often unique to the federal research enterprise.  Applicants design their own research projects to be compatible with the interests of the sponsoring laboratory.  Many opportunities are open to non-US as well as US citizens. 
Most awards are for one year, renewable in annual increments to a total of three years.  Senior researchers may apply for shorter periods.  Further details are on the Web site.

Sponsoring laboratories include:  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,  US Environmental Protection Agency, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Air Force Research Laboratory, US Air Force Academy, US Army Research Laboratory, US Military Academy, Naval Research Laboratory, US Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory and US Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center, US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, including Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases.
 Awards include generous stipends ranging from $45,000 to $80,000 per year and higher for additional experience.  Awards also include relocation, professional travel and health insurance.  Prospective applicants must identify a research opportunity at a participating laboratory using the Web site listed below, and contact the prospective Research Adviser at the lab as early as possible prior to the anticipated application date to discuss research interests and funding opportunities.   Applications must be submitted online directly to the NRC at www.nationalacademies.org/rap.  CVs will not be accepted in lieu of online applications.  Annual application submission deadlines are February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1 for reviews in mid-March, mid-June, mid-September and mid-January respectively.  Awards are announced within six to eight weeks of each application review deadline.  Questions should be directed to the NRC at TEL: 202-334-2760 or rap@nas.edu
