Description of PostFollowing success in 2013 ‘Research for the Benefit of SMEs’ call from the EU 7th Framework Programme, an opportunity exists for a researcher to join the Precision Engineering & Manufacturing (PEM) research team at IT Sligo under the ‘Bio-PolyTec’ project. IT Sligo are the coordinating partner of a consortium of EU SMEs and research institutes on the project.
Bio-PolyTec aims to reduce development time and cost and enhance performance of bioresorbable medical devices by developing novel monitoring and control technology for the manufacturing process. This will enable end-user medical device companies to significantly reduce manufacturing costs and bring new products to market.
The appointee will conduct research in assessing and developing the use of optical spectroscopy techniques for assessment of key properties of bioresorbable polymers during processing.

Essential Qualifications/Skills 
Applicants for this post must have:
  • Honours Degree in a relevant engineering or physical science subject;
  • At least two years practical experience in planning, executing and analysing experiments, particularly with the application of spectroscopic instruments or other relevant characterisation methods
  • Ability to contribute to development of novel methods for in-process assessment of bioresorbable polymer systems
  • Excellent mathematical and software skills
  • Ability to contribute to project management and administration and reporting.
  • Good technical report writing skills.
  • Demonstrable intellectual ability. Enthusiasm for research.
  • Willingness to travel and work abroad for short periods (approx. up to 2 weeks).
Ability to communicate complex information clearly and to build effective relationships with the wider research consortium of academics and industrialists.
Desirable Qualifications/SkillsHold or be about to obtain a PhD relevant to material characterisation
  • Experience in at least one of the following: Spectroscopic analysis of polymers; Process Spectroscopy; Analysis of the scattering ‘background’ in a spectroscopic application
  • Previous experience of developing chemometric models
