Job summary:

Conduct basic and applied research on characterization of metallic alloys, semiconductors and organic/polymeric materials; apply knowledge of transmission electron microscopy to understand the structure and microchemistry of materials with an emphasis on metallic systems; develop and implement strategies to maintain advanced leadership in materials characterization; document research results.

Use knowledge of scanning electron microscopy, electron backscattered diffraction, Ni and Fe-based alloys, phase transformations, phase diagrams, and crystallography to immediately assist with a high volume workflow.

Candidate will be expected to develop and maintain good communications and responsiveness to the needs of the team and internal GE Global Research (GRC) researchers.

The ideal candidate will strive to maintain high data quality standards expectations through application of analytical skills, knowledge of materials, and fluency in scanning electron microscopy and electron backscattered diffraction.
As a Materials Scientist in SEM/EBSD, working in large multidisciplinary teams you will:

Conduct research related to the development of new materials systems, engineered materials, microstructures, and processes.

Characterize residual strains in welds and other components.

Use scanning electron microscopes to characterize the structure, composition, and properties of materials.

Prepare proposals to GE businesses and external funding agencies.

Maintain high productivity in a high volume laboratory setting.

Be expected to have knowledge of preparing SEM samples for a wide range of materials.

Have proven expertise in the interpretation of electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) data and operating the software for a wide range of EDS systems.

Be expected to use and possibly develop software to analyze data for, image analysis, EDS, and electron diffraction.

Develop or assist in the development new sample preparation techniques for SEM / EBSD.

Interact with GRC program teams, GE businesses, and other characterization teams to provide total characterization solutions to GE projects.

Stay current on state-of-art characterization equipment and methods and propose and implement new capabilities to provide added value.
