The lab has expertise in Luminescent materials: to explore next generation optical materials for lighting, healthcare, and energy applications
- Ceramic Processing: to develop novel net shape processing routes for making monolithic, functional, or graded ceramic materials or coatings and Electroceramic and Magnetic Materials: to develop novel materials and processing methods for application in energy efficient GE products and renewable energy solutions. Role Summary/Purpose: This job entails synthesis of novel compositions of matter with differentiated optical, magnetic, or mechanical properties; developing processing-microstructure-property relationships and scalable processing and net shaping methodologies for ceramic, ceramic-matrix composite, and layered functional materials systems for applications in GE products. The job requires strong understanding of functional & structural ceramics (synthesis, processing, structure-property correlation, scale-up etc.).
Essential Responsibilities:
- Conduct industrial research to develop structural and functional ceramic materials and coating solutions for GE products for application in transportation, healthcare, oil and gas, energy, energy storage, and water markets.

- Conduct industrial research to develop scalable processing and net-shaping methods for ceramic, composite, and functional materials.

- Develop scalable processes to make coatings for environmental, thermal, or other barrier applications.

- Design, optimization and scale-up of ceramics & glasses for GE products for application in energy, renewables & energy storage, transportation, healthcare & water markets.

- Use experimental methods to understand processing-microstructure-property relationships and how these apply to the structural ceramics coatings.

- Work with global research teams to understand their capabilities and bring them to bear to solve problems for the business.

- Build research programs by working with GE businesses to identify opportunities.

- Draw up technology road maps for the growth of ceramic processing and coatings technologies for GE.

- Formulate research objectives and action plans to address the needs of GE businesses.

- Provide mentorship to scientists, research associates and support staff.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Ph.D .in materials science or ceramics, with a strong PhD thesis work in structural, glass or functional ceramics.

- A minimum of 5 years of post-PhD work experience in an academic or industrial research environment.

- Solid experience in project management and leading cross functional teams

- Ability to develop and execute designed experimental methods to understand processing, structure-property relationships in materials systems

- Good understanding of structural ceramics, & application of ceramic materials

- Good understanding of ceramic processing methods

- Strong basics in processing-structure-property relationships demonstrated through course work, relevant projects and publications and/or patents.

- Strong global communication skills

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
Desired Characteristics: Good understanding of materials selection, performance and applications of structural ceramics materials for engineering applications for energy, transportation & aviation industries. Experience in scoping, defining, and executing R&D programs is a prerequisite. Demonstrate ability to formulate, plan and conduct research projects with defined objectives and deliverables within financial and schedule constraints.
