Applications are invited for the above post to work with Professor Darren Robinson in the framework of a European funded project at the University of Nottingham. The successful candidates will register for a 3 year PhD at the Faculty of Engineering within the Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN): Smart cities with sustainable energy systems – CiNERGY.

The successful candidate will extend the scope of building-scale simulation models to the urban scale and integrate these software solutions with tools developed by other network partners.  City models developed will be calibrated using case study data to demonstrate fitness for purpose.
The successful applicant will:
  • Review the capabilities of the building simulation program IES and definition of the modelling (and associated data) requirements at the urban scale to provide the desired predictive capabilities.
  • Prepare a technical specification describing the methods for extending IES’s capabilities from the building to the urban scale.
  • Implement the agreed modelling improvements.
  • Acquire data describing the physical composition and performance measurements relating to a real urban case study site. Testing of a quasi-automated model calibration methodology, to minimise deviations between measured and predicted performance.
Candidates should have a Master’s degree or equivalent in engineering, mathematics, physics or computing, and be eligible to enrol in a PhD programme at Nottingham University. It is also a requirement that candidates have experience in computer modelling and simulation. Experience of building performance simulation and urban energy modelling would be an advantage, but is not essential.
Candidates will be required to meet the Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher eligibility criteria (ftp://ftp.cordis.europa.eu/pub/fp7/docs/wp/people/m-wp-201201_en.pdf, page 8). In particular at the time of appointment candidates must not have obtained a PhD or equivalent and have less than four years full-time equivalent research experience. Additionally, they should not have resided in the host country for more than 12 months in the last 3 years prior to appointment (not including short stays or holidays).  Researchers are normally required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up the appointment.
This full-time post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 36 months.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Darren Robinson (darren.robinson@nottingham.ac.uk) and/or to Mr Andrew Jones (A.Jones@nottingham.ac.uk) Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
