    Sandia National Laboratories is searching for a Postdoctoral Appointee to join the Bioenergy and Defense Technologies Department located in our Albuquerque, NM facility. This position is a temporary, full-time opportunity.

    The candidate selected in this position will be required to obtain and maintain a DOE-granted “Q-level” security clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship. Security clearance is not required to start.

    Department DescriptionThe Bioenergy and Defense Technologies department, which is part of Sandia's Biological and Materials Sciences Center, supports mission areas in biodefense, emerging infectious disease, and biofuels. The department conducts fundamental and applied research in cell biology, immunology, and microbiology.  The focus is on the research and development of advanced enabling technologies with a focus on nanoscience, biological imaging and image analysis, biophysical analysis of biological systems and data analysis. Current research projects include analysis of receptor activation and cell signaling processes, nanomaterials for drug delivery, pathogenesis, plant physiology, cellulase enzymes, as well as algal biochemistry and cultivation characterization for biofuels applications. We conduct research for the National Institutes of Health, Basic Energy Sciences, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, U.S. Industry, and Sandia's Laboratory Directed Research & Development program.

    Primary Job DutiesA Postdoctoral Researcher is needed to join a multidisciplinary team that develops nanomaterials for chemical and biological defense applications. Current projects focus on development of porous nanoparticles for in vivo delivery of antibiotics, antivirals, antigens, and nerve agent countermeasures. Successful candidates will be knowledgeable about materials science/engineering and one or more biological sciences, including microbiology, virology, and immunology.

    Post Doc Hiring ProgramThe Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management’s discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments.

    Required·   Doctorate in Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or other related area
    ·   Experience with synthesis of nanoparticles, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, UV-visible spectroscopy, fluorimetry, tissue and microorganism culture, confocal fluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry is required
    ·   Self-motivated and independent with researcher
    ·   Excellent oral and written communication skills
    ·   Strong publication record in nanotherapeutics and/or nanovaccines
    Desired·   Familiarity with sol-gel chemistry, aerosol science, and animal models of infectious disease and/or nerve agent poisoning
    ·   Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students

    Security ClearancePosition requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted “Q-level” security clearance.
    Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
